Statistics

We have been learning to:
  • Pose questions for investigation
  • Collect data
  • Display data in tally charts, pictograms and bar graphs
  • Make statements about data displays
The photo below shows the students in pairs interviewing other class members to find out what was their favourite farm animal. The students recorded responses using tally marks on a tally chart. At the end of the lesson the pairs reported back their findings to the class.

Our Class Garden

From our discussions after our Butterfly Hunt we came to the conclusion we can encourage our butterflies to stay around our school if we supplied food for them so.... Last week Mrs Ryan and Mrs Heath took a child from each class in the junior syndicate to choose some flowers for our class gardens. On behalf of Room 4 Ben went flower shopping. He picked some flowers which were colourful and full of nectar for our butterflies to eat! We took turns to plant our flowers. Every day the star of the day is in charge of watering our flowers and our class swan plant.

Learning spelling can be fun!

Below are some suggestions to help your child learn how to practice their Spelling Rocket words!

♥    Spell words with magnetic letters .
♥    Use alphabet stamps to stamp words on paper.
♥    Cut letters from magazines or newspaper to spell the words. .
♥    Sandpaper rubbings: Cut each letter out of sandpaper and glue it onto card. The child spells out their word and puts a piece of paper over it and does a crayon rubbing.
♥    Window spelling: Buy window washable markers and the child can write their words on the windows.
♥    Make a word search or crossword puzzle at Puzzlemaker.com with the spelling words.
♥    Rainbow Words: Students write each spelling word with their pencil. They then go back and
trace each word with a crayon. They do this two more times with two different crayons.
♥  Telephone Writing:  prepare paper with the spelling words written according the keypad of a telephone. Students will look at a telephone keypad to figure out the spelling word. They will write the spelling word on the paper the parent has prepared.
♥    Disappearing words: Write a word on a chalkboard with a wet sponge. Aim a small fan at it to speed drying. The child writes the words as many times as they can CORRECTLY AND NEATLY before the word "disappears". It's a nice twist to writing each word multiple times and they LOVE it!
♥    Write spelling words in white crayon -or any light colored crayon, then paint over them with watercolor paint. The white crayon acts as a resist and the words "magically" appear.
♥    Guess the word: One partner "writes" a spelling word with his/her finger on his/her partner's back.

Inquiry

This term we are learning about change which takes place during a living thing's lifecycle and caring for a plant and looking after a garden.

Today we put our swan plant outside. We are hoping a butterfly dropped some eggs onto our swan plant so we can observe the butterfly life cycle in action!

We went on a Butterfly Hunt to see where our butterflies go after they have changed into a butterfly. We found some butterflies across the road in the Senior School garden. We discussed why we thought the butterflies enjoyed living there. We brainstormed what we need in our class garden so our butterflies stay over our side of the school!
These were some of our thoughts:
  • We need flowers in our garden so the butterflies have nectar to eat
  • We need water near by for the butterflies to drink
  • We need some bushy areas near our garden so the butterflies can shade from the sun
